Evolution of the Art Team
The Evolution of Traditional Craft Techniques with Over 300 Years of History and the Gaia Road Art Team
The Gaia Road art team carries on traditional craft techniques that originate from Takagamine in the northern part of Kyoto City. This craftsmanship, which boasts a history of over 300 years, has been passed down through generations of artisans and is known for having supplied the imperial family over the years. Notably, the 12th generation artisan created elegant kimonos and obi that reflected royal tastes by uniquely blending traditional craft techniques with powdered gemstones. His works are made from fabrics suitable for long-term preservation and feature distinctive methods that incorporate emeralds and diamonds.
Additionally, this team has crafted the bridal gown for Her Majesty the Empress, receiving high praise for the beauty and tradition of their craftsmanship. After the passing of the 12th generation artisan, the craftsmen developed new techniques, merging innovative modern technologies with traditional craftsmanship.
This art team directly worked on the creations of the 12th generation artisan during his lifetime, and as a result of their efforts, they were awarded the Nobel Prize in the arts. They have received international acclaim and have been selected three times as UNESCO greeting artists.
Particularly, the 12th generation artisan, having experienced the brutality of World War II, cherished the theme of “World Peace” in his works, praying that such cruelty would never return to the world. His creations embody both elegance and dignity, and they continue to be beloved by many fans today.
This proud art team remains a treasure of ours, reflecting the beauty of the past and the innovations of the future while continuing to uphold the excellence of traditional techniques.
